James R. Helvey III
Biography
Jay Helvey founded Helvey and Associates, LLC to provide strategic financial risk management advice to Executive Administrators and Board Members at universities, independent schools, and nonprofit foundations. Most recently, Helvey was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cygnifi Derivatives Services, headquartered in New York.
Helvey’s background in financial markets, risk management, and strategic planning includes a fifteen year career at J.P. Morgan where he was a Managing Director and served as Vice-Chairman of J.P. Morgan’s Global Risk Management Committee. In that role, he was responsible for managing the firm’s global risk positions, balance sheet and capital. Following the collapse of Long Term Capital, Helvey represented J.P. Morgan on the industry sponsored Counterparty Risk Management Policy Group where he served with other Wall Street executives to propose important changes to industry practices for managing credit risk.
Helvey’s responsibilities at J.P. Morgan have included running the firm’s swap derivative business in Asia and the short-term interest rate and foreign exchange derivative business in Europe. He also served as J.P. Morgan’s Global Head of Derivative Counterparty Risk Management and was instrumental in positioning JP Morgan as a leader in active, sophisticated counterparty risk management.
In February 2000, J.P. Morgan appointed Helvey as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cygnifi Derivatives Services, an independent risk management technology company with offices in New York, London, and Tokyo.
Helvey is a member of the Wake Forest University Board of Trustees where he serves on the Investment Policy Committee. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Forsyth Country Day School Board of Trustees and Chairman of its Finance and Investment Committee. In addition, Helvey is a member of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs Advisory Board.
Helvey graduated magna cum laude with honors from Wake Forest University where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Masters degree from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Helvey was a Fulbright Scholar to the University of Cologne, Germany and an International Fellow at Columbia University.
He is married with three sons and resides in North Carolina.
